Why The Cloud Is A Game Changer

This week at the Defrag Conference, Michael Krigsman , an authority on the causes and prevention of IT failures, was the  moderator of a panel called Moving To The Cloud: A Panel Discussion. Members of this panel referred to a white paper published earlier this month by Microsoft entitled “The Economics Of The Cloud”.

The overall theme of the paper and Krigsman’s panel is Things Are Changing. We are experiencing a transition in the way people consume information.  It is no longer on a personal computer that is tied to a desk or in an office. People are accessing and using information everywhere; in meetings, in cars, in airports, making otherwise wasted time more productive; in other words: information anytime, anywhere. This shift has far reaching effects since it involves not only users and consumers of this information, but also people in the IT world, the content developers and distributors, and the system architects and builders.

What it comes down to is cost. When using cloud computing, the cost to provide such services can be much less for the supplier of software to deliver the product and run an infrastructure.  On top of operational costs, there is additional leverage in system maintenance and updating, growth and expansion, and flexibility to respond and handle surges in demand.

The great thing is that it allows companies to focus their time and resources on what they do best; creating amazing products and services and delivering value to their customer.

A Few Tips On Being More Productive

In these days of 24 hour, 7 day a week communication it is hard for the typical person to “stay on top” of everything going on. You have emails, phone calls, faxes, breaking news, video, status updates and much more coming at you. Keeping up with all this incoming information, keeping your clients happy and getting your job can be a challenge in these days of, lets call it, hypercommunicatons.

Here are some simple, easy, these you can do to help wade through some of the information coming at you:

- Use a Blog Reader. In short it uses RSS feeds to send the most current blog/website updates to you. One of the most popular and easy to use is Google Reader. Simply put a blog reader brings the blog & website articles to you. Instead of checking websites all the time for updated content you just subscribe to a RSS feed and it will update the blog reader.

-Bring your favorite websites/bookmarks with you everywhere using Xmarks. This little addon to your web browser lets you sync your favorites on any computer you use and your mobile phone. Using this tool you can easily mark a website at work and follow up on your phone or another computer later.

-Use a tool like Meshin with your email. Using something like this that brings all the information about a person, place, and business in one place makes your day a lot easier and faster. Everything you need is right there in your email, it is making sense of it and bringing the information out that is time intensive.

-GoogleDocs: You can access your documents from any computer and even your phone. You can have several people edit a document at the same time, make notes, and collaborate. Being able to access a document using the cloud, at anytime is very powerful.
